Scandium Powder

Scandium Powder

Scandium powder is made from scandium metal, including scandium metal by reduction method and distillation method. The color of scandium ingot is silver, however the powder is gray. It oxidizes in air and turns into light yellow or light pink powder. The powder is easy to fire, which also react with water and release hydrogen. Scandium metal could react with tellurium and form scandium telluride (Sc2Te3) monocrystal. The common scandium alloy is scandium-aluminum alloy (Sc 2%, Sc 5%). Except that, scandium-magnesium alloys, scandium-nickel alloys, scandium-magnesium-aluminum alloys and scandium-magnesium alloys are also available. Scandium metal is soluble in dilute acid and react with acid to form various salts. It should avoid air, oxides, halogen and moisture for storage.

Applications

Scandium foil is light, but the melting point is much higher than aluminum. It could replace aluminum to make various aircraft. It is raw material for high-melting alloy, for example Al-Sc alloy. Mg-Sc alloy, Sc-Ti alloy, which can apply to space shuttle, rocket and other high-end purpose. Except these, scandium is additive for steel, tungsten and chromium alloy.

Scandium powder play important role in third generation Illuminant that is scandium sodium lamp. It is a kind of metal halide lamp that fill with sodium iodide and scandium iodide and at same time scandium and sodium foil in lamp.

Scandium slug is best barrier metal in metal-insulator-semiconductor silicon photocell and solar cell.
