Thallium Hydroxide

Thallium hydroxide is white needlelike crystalline particle or powder, which is a thallium salt. It changes to yellow in air and reacts with carbon dioxide in air that form thallium(I) carbonate. Thallium(I) hydroxide own strong alkaline, so its concentrated aqueous solution corrode glass. Thallous ion oxidize by chlorine, bromine, aqua regia and other oxidizing agent, which get thallium(III) hydroxide (Tl(OH)3). However Tl(OH)3 is not stable. On the counter, thallium III ion reduce by sulfur dioxide and hydrogen sulfide, which get thallous ion. Thallium(I) sulfate , thallium(I) oxide or thallium metal is the raw material.

Applications

Thallium(I) hydroxide aqueous solution is raw material  for other thallous compounds, but not for free thallium(I) hydroxide solide. It is also an indicator in analytical chemistry, which is for testing ozone.
